Carriacou is the largest of Grenada’s sister islands and part of the Grenadines, lying north of mainland Grenada between the Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean. The island has a relatively dry climate and a landscape of low hills, rocky headlands, coral reefs, beaches, and small valleys used for farming. Hillsborough is the main settlement, while Windward, L’Esterre, and Tyrell Bay are among the island’s other communities.
Rye is a diverse town, supported by fishing, boat-building, pottery-making, and light industry such as electronics. Padre Island is a long barrier island along the Texas Gulf Coast, extending beside the Gulf of Mexico from the Corpus Christi area toward the southern tip of Texas. Much of the island consists of broad beaches, coastal dunes, grasslands, tidal flats, and shallow lagoons. The northern section is closely associated with Corpus Christi, while South Padre Island is a developed resort community farther south.
