A lesser-known river port in the Mekong Delta, Sa Dec was once the capital of Dong Thap province of southern Vietnam. Today, it is best known for its flower gardens and authentic bustling market. The city is also famous as the setting for French writer Marguerite Duras' 1984 novel, The Lover, and its 1991 film adaptation of the same name.
Sighisoara rises above the Târnava Mare River as one of the few medieval citadels in Europe that is still lived in and admired today. Its historic center has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999, recognized for its long history as a fortified Saxon settlement and its role in trade and defense on the edges of central Europe. Oak Bluffs is a coastal town on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, facing Vineyard Sound on the island’s northeastern shore. It is known for its colorful Carpenter Gothic cottages, harbor, beaches, and long association with summer tourism. The town center developed around Circuit Avenue, while the waterfront includes Oak Bluffs Harbor and a public beach along the sound.
While an earthquake in 1972 left few buildings intact in downtown Managua, new areas are building up. Managua has excellent restaurants, nice hotels, and is a good base for day tours into the countryside.
Pinnacle Mountain State Park is a protected recreation area west of Little Rock, Arkansas, centered on the distinctive summit of Pinnacle Mountain. The park covers more than 2,300 acres along the Arkansas River and combines forested slopes, rocky ridges, wetlands, and open river landscapes. Pinnacle Mountain rises above the surrounding Ouachita Mountain foothills and is one of the most recognizable natural landmarks near the state capital.
