Opatija, located on Croatia’s Kvarner Bay, has been drawing visitors since the 19th century, when Austro-Hungarian aristocrats built grand villas along its Adriatic shoreline. Today, many of those same buildings still stand with some restored as luxury hotels and others preserved as cultural landmarks. The town’s most recognizable structure, Villa Angiolina, opened in 1844 and marked the start of Opatija’s rise as a fashionable seaside resort.

Douglas Island is a forested island in the Alexander Archipelago of southeastern Alaska, separated from Juneau by Gastineau Channel. Although geographically an island, it is closely connected to Juneau by the Juneau-Douglas Bridge and functions as part of the capital city’s wider urban area. The community of Douglas occupies the island’s southern end, while much of the remaining landscape consists of dense coastal forest, steep hills, streams, and rocky shoreline.
