Hoedspruit is a small town in Limpopo province, positioned between the northern Drakensberg and the Greater Kruger wildlife region. It is surrounded by bushveld, mountains, private reserves, and important conservation areas, making wildlife and nature central to the local economy. The town serves as a practical base for exploring nearby protected areas and private reserves, while its agricultural surroundings produce citrus, mangoes, and other subtropical crops.

Athabasca Glacier is one of the most accessible glaciers in the Canadian Rockies, located in Jasper National Park along the Columbia Icefield Parkway in Alberta. It forms part of the Columbia Icefield, a vast area of ice and snow that feeds several major river systems. The glacier extends down from the icefield between rugged mountain peaks, with its lower section visible from a marked viewpoint and trail.

The former settlement is surrounded by an exceptionally dry landscape of sand, gravel, and sparse desert vegetation. Today, windblown sand fills many of its empty buildings, creating a distinctive scene where rooms, corridors, and staircases are gradually being reclaimed by the desert.
