Important both historically and economically, the beachside city of La Serena is one of Chile's oldest post-Columbian cities. The capital of Texas, Austin is located in the south-central area. It was named the capital of the Republic of Texas in 1839. The main campus of the University of Texas is located here, founded in 1881.

In northern Mexico, it is the capital of Chihuahua State and known most for the hairless dogs that bear the same name. Pancho Villa operated out of the surrounding mountains. It is a major mining and cattle raising center. The smelting plant employs many of the citizens.
