Ghent
If it wasn't for Paris, Ghent would be medieval Europe's largest city. Steeped in history both rebellious and industrious, it sits at the junction of the Leie and Scheldt rivers and was once the site of armed battles by its townsfolk, who raged against heavy taxes and restricted civil liberties.
Lucca
Lucca, a Tuscan city surrounded by remarkably intact Renaissance walls, offers more than just postcard views. Known for its quiet streets and grand piazzas, Lucca stands apart with its circular street layout, still following the lines of a Roman amphitheater from centuries ago. The walls, now repurposed as a 4-kilometer tree-lined park, are a favorite route for locals and visitors who explore them on foot or by bike, passing old bastions and panoramic viewpoints along the way.
Taichung
Founded in 1721 by mainland Chinese, it is the third largest city in Taiwan. Occupied by Japanese from 1895-1945, it totally leveled and rebuilt. With many museums, gardens and universities, it is considered the cultural center of Taiwan.
Nanaimo
Town on East side of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Excellent shopping for native and maritime items with direct ferry access to Vancouver.
Charlottetown
Charlottetown, the charming capital of Prince Edward Island, is where history and modernity blend seamlessly. Often called the "Birthplace of Confederation," this picturesque city holds a special place in Canadian history as the site of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference, which paved the way for the creation of Canada.
