Aitutaki is the second most visited of the magical Cook Islands and is recommended as a "must see" extension of any Rarotonga holiday. This is a place of great natural beauty and tranquility, where crystal clear waters and swaying palms provide a simple tonic to sooth away the pressures of the outside world.
Hong Kong is one of the few places in the world where a 700-year-old fishing village sits minutes away from the headquarters of international banks. Once a British colony and now a Special Administrative Region of China, the city carries traces of Cantonese, colonial, and global influences in its streets, rituals, and food. The city has more than 300 hiking trails, including the well-known Lion Rock hike, which ends at a dramatic cliff overlooking Kowloon’s dense skyline.
High in the Khumbu region, Lobuche sits in a stark alpine setting along the trail toward Mount Everest. Surrounded by rocky terrain and glacial formations, the village stands close to the Khumbu Glacier, where the landscape shifts into shades of gray, white, and deep blue. The air here is thin and crisp, and the silence is often broken only by the wind moving across the valley.
The capital, 450-year-old Asuncion ("Mother of Cities") merits a visit of unhurried nights - that way, you'll have time to sit in the main square and people-watch. The shopping in this grand city of 729,000 is the finest the country offers, and the cathedral and archaeological museum are both highlights. The governmental architecture is interesting; don't miss the Congressional Palace, Customs House and Government Palace (in the style of the Louvre).
Flatey is a small island in Breiðafjörður in western Iceland, known for its compact settlement, historic buildings, and quiet coastal landscape. The island is almost entirely flat, with low fields and rocky shores extending between the surrounding skerries. Its main settlement consists of a cluster of colorful wooden houses, many of which have been preserved as part of the island’s heritage.
