The savvy traveler, though, might choose to skip the jaunt across the river and enjoy many similar sights, shopping and cuisine as those offered in the teeming French city.

As the capital of the Ben Tre Province, the city of Ben Tre is located in southern Vietnam on the Mekong Delta. Connected to other provinces by a network of bridges, the town draws less tourist traffic than nearby My Tho and Tra Vinh. River tours are a popular choice here, as are visits to the well-known temples and pagodas in the area. Whatever you choose, be sure to make time for a stop at one of the coconut candy factories in town. The handmade keo dua (coconut candy) is a local specialty that has led to some calling this area the "Land of Coconut."
