You'll enjoy the city mainly for its colonial mansions, twisting streets, turn-of-the-century Latin quarters, and balmy breezes sweeping across its palm-fringed beaches.
Kolsai Lakes National Park
Kolsai Lakes National Park is a protected mountain area in southeastern Kazakhstan, located in the northern Tian Shan east of Almaty. The park is centered on a chain of alpine lakes surrounded by steep forested slopes, rocky peaks, and mountain valleys. The three Kolsai Lakes occupy different elevations along the Kolsai River, with the landscape changing from coniferous forest at lower levels to alpine terrain higher in the mountains.
Mammoth Lakes
Mammoth Lakes, tucked into California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, is a year-round destination that combines alpine scenery with outdoor adventure. Known for its crisp mountain air and dramatic landscapes, the town sits near the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park, making it an ideal base for exploring the region.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area lies about 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip, where the Mojave Desert rises into sandstone cliffs, rugged mountains, and broad desert valleys. Nevada’s first National Conservation Area, it covers nearly 198,000 acres and provides a sharp contrast to the developed landscape of Las Vegas. The area is best known for its red and cream-colored rock formations, especially the Calico Hills and the Red Rock escarpment.
Burkina Faso
Who would have thought, back in the tumultuous coup and counter coup days of the 1970s, that Burkina Faso would become the cultural darling of West Africa? Unlikely as it seems, Burkina Faso has become the Utah of West Africa, hosting a biennial film festival that rivals the Sundance Film Festival for cultural clout. When it's not hosting film festivals, it's busy organizing its other biennial cultural festival.
