Kerak is a fortress town 75 miles (120km) from Amman, and contains one of the two major Crusader castles in the Kingdom. The castle, built to protect the approach to Jerusalem, stands on a craggy plateau 4,300ft above sea level. It was built in the early part of the 12th century and held for 50 years by the Crusaders until they were defeated by Salah al Din (Saladin) in 1189.

Hammerfest, located above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, is one of the northernmost towns in the world with a population of over 10,000. It’s a place where the midnight sun shines from mid-May to late July, and the polar night sets in from late November to mid-January. Historically a hub for Arctic hunting and fishing, Hammerfest was also the first town in Northern Europe to install electric streetlights in 1891.

Drakensberg in Lesotho forms part of the country’s dramatic highland landscape, where steep mountains, deep valleys, and high plateaus dominate the scenery. The range is especially prominent in the eastern part of Lesotho, with peaks rising above broad upland areas and remote settlements. The capital, 450-year-old Asuncion ("Mother of Cities") merits a visit of unhurried nights - that way, you'll have time to sit in the main square and people-watch. The shopping in this grand city of 729,000 is the finest the country offers, and the cathedral and archaeological museum are both highlights. The governmental architecture is interesting; don't miss the Congressional Palace, Customs House and Government Palace (in the style of the Louvre).
