Kodiak Island's primary city, Kodiak is among seven communities on the island. All transportation, whether by ferryboat or aircraft, goes through here.

Important both historically and economically, the beachside city of La Serena is one of Chile's oldest post-Columbian cities. The region's silver, copper and agriculture were so important that the city had its own mint. Canyon de Chelly National Monument lies in northeastern Arizona on Navajo Nation land, surrounding a network of deep sandstone canyons near Chinle. The monument is distinctive because it is both a protected landscape and a living community, with Diné families continuing to farm, raise livestock, and maintain homes within the canyon.

Nogales is a border city in Santa Cruz County in southern Arizona, directly adjoining Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. Its setting in the Santa Cruz River Valley gives the city a distinctive landscape of rolling hills, desert vegetation, and mountain ranges. As one of the principal border crossings between Arizona and Mexico, Nogales has long served as a center for trade, transportation, and cross-border commerce.

High in the Khumbu region, Lobuche sits in a stark alpine setting along the trail toward Mount Everest. Surrounded by rocky terrain and glacial formations, the village stands close to the Khumbu Glacier, where the landscape shifts into shades of gray, white, and deep blue. The air here is thin and crisp, and the silence is often broken only by the wind moving across the valley.
